nature turned up the oven to roast here in maryland and all along the east coast. temperature records aren't just breaking, they're popping. as the mercury flows past 100 in many parts of maryland. good evening, i'm kelly swoope. the heat headlines are remarkable. a record at bwi today, 105 degrees. and just think, a couple of months ago it was a record snowfall. now, not las vegas, not phoenix, but frederick was among if not the hots spots in the entire country today, a scorching 106 degrees. and csx which owns the tracks which carry the camden line cut the speed of commuter trains in half because the extreme heat can cause the rails to bend under pressure. >>> maryland is broiling again. and more looks to be on the way. wyatt is here with the first forecast. >> after record smashing heat across maryland today i wish i could tell you things are about to let upment we'll see relief tomorrow. it's not going to happen. we'll see just as much heat, a carbon copy. let's take a look at what we're seeing right now. we just dipped below 90 degrees in dc and baltimore, very, very hot evening

of maryland. >>> we have seen a lot of rain. more than we have all summer. we're looking a live look at downtown baltimore. are we on the clear, wyatt? >> kelly, i think the heaviest of the rains are behind us now. it's been one murky, rainy day across baltimore and still the chance of a popup shower or two before we clear it out tonight. let's take a look at maryland's most powerful radar. you can see a couple things. number one, there's not a lot out there right now. number two, what is out there is primarily up in cassel county and precipitation in northern and hartford county and one or two showers sneaking into carol county. look at all the clearing already going on in western maryland with the sun that come out that way. they pushed up to 90 towards hagerstown. temperatures have been held down all day thanks to the clouds and rain. spotty showers still possible. but we will see clearing conditions overnight. we'll talk about that and how things look over the next couple of days. big changes, we'll have it for you coming up. >> police arrested a man they say has been burglarizi

a little bit of thunder in the panhandle of west virginia and in western maryland. those are drifting to the east and southeast and may be moving closer to the shenandoah valley and perhaps into washington and frederick counties in maryland over the next hour or so. right now, we don't any storms or severe weather in the region. right now, 90 degrees at national airport. it is in the upper 80s in montgomery, arlington and fairfax. we have the high humidity. the dew points are in the low to mid-70s, sweltering humidity. hagerstown the a90 degrees as well. some of the storms could begin to pick up in intensity in the next hour or two. out of the mountains behind the front out in the ohio valley, temperatures are in the 70s right now. over the last 12 hours, that front is now just beginning to move into the mountains and slight risk of severe weather in this yellow zone. much of virginia, the district, most of maryland under a slight risk for damaging winds between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. as highs reach the low to mid-90s before that. after that, lower humidity movers in. details on friday an

have gotten more than other areas. i'll start with the satellite imagery. most of maryland is under cuts. west of hagerstown, the clouds have thinned out. the front is moving eastward. add the rain. most of the yellow areas, south of d.c., into charles county, are on the eastern shore. that is where the rain seems to be. it tapers off in carroll county. the heaviest rains will in southern counties. the flood warning that is in effect for two more minutes will expire. the happiest of those rains have moved across the bay and southward. you can see the red arrows along the eastern shore. thunder and lightning with that as well as the rain. let's look at current conditions. with rain showers in the area, we show a reading of 75 degrees at the airport. temperatures have dropped off of the topic. it is really a muggy out there. the winds have gone calm. the flood threat, the warning for hertford county is ending now, then cut 3:00 pm. it expires -- 9:00 a.m.. it expires. here are the temperatures. annapolis, 75. a.d. at ocean city. far western 60's in maryland. notice how the clouds bega

rains falling in western maryland. ultimately, out of this line of storms, got up to 2 1/2 inches or better than of that rain. now, we advance this to 9:00, and it's still raining pretty well. it's coming into frederick, and frederick got over an inch of rain, and then the light just kind of falls apart. it's like it gets near baltimore and it says, no, i'm want going to do that. so at 3:00 this morning, we saw a few sprinkles and showers around the area. we're beginning to see a little more activity, but it's still not very heavy. the front still coming in though today. the air is loaded with moisture, so we're hoping this front will trigger locally heavy rain, at least from time to time. we'll talk about the forecast details in just a moment. >> our big story this morning, the biggest spy swap isn't he happened of the cold war has a cockeysville connection. >> a former western colonel is one of four spies released from prison in exchange for russian agents being held in the u.s. as it turns out, alexander zaporozhsky owns a home in baltimore county. david collins has the story.

at the university of maryland back in march. dissidents were arrested following a rowdy celebration. -- students were arrested following a rowdy celebration. a lawyer representing six others said that five of charges were dropped. those charges will still move forward. three people were injured this morning when flames broke out of home in baltimore county. by your kreuz responded shortly after 10:00. -- fire crews responded shortly after 10:00. the fire started in the basement where crews believe there was some sort of explosion. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. it took firefighters 30 minutes to put up the flavors at an apartment building in northwest baltimore. the fire started on the sixth floor of the strass mthmore towr building. an elderly woman was taken to bayview medical center to be treated for burns. no word on what sparked the fire. earlier firefighters were called to the 2300 block of jordan hill ave. we're told the home is occupied and no one was home at the time. the cause remains under investigation. bge crews were called after a car director of the gas line.

of western maryland, a little better on the eastern shore, low 70s. over the last 12 hours the high pressure that was over us has moved off the coast as a result winds are shifting into the south and southeast. that is bringing in the increased humidity and that will be with us here throughout the day today as the heat builds too. we will have that heat index up to around 105 by mid afternoon. keep that in mind and definitely the best idea, stay in the ac. as we have those temperatures hovering around 100 this afternoon. then overnight tonight, not much of a break through the evening. it will be near 90 by mid evening. by dawn tomorrow, the low to mid 80s, a really hot start on saturday morning. during the day on saturday, we'll have it even hotter. temperatures should maybe even exceed 100 degrees saturday afternoon. will probably easily break the record. tomorrow's record is 96 set on that date in 1986. in fact, tomorrow's record high of 96 is the coolest record high in july. we'll probably break that tomorrow. the heat index on saturday will get to 110. and then on sunday, should be a bit
